黑莓河旅店(Blackberry River Inn)

I cannot say enough about this wonderful inn and it's staff. The breakfast was absolutely delightful everyday and I originally planned to stay two nights but booked a third because it was so restful. The countryside is lovely with lots of hiking around, and the buildings themselves feel beautiful and historic. The staff is attentive and helpful and knowledgeable about the area. I can't quite put into words what is so special about this place but it is special.

In the late 1980s, while driving back home from college with my girlfriend, we broke down in the middle of the night - in winter - not far from this inn. This predated cellphones so my girlfriend and I walked back down the road to this place; there being really nothing else around. After a while of knocking, this lady came to the door and we explained our predicament. She said we could call our parents, but that it made the most sense to just stay the night and she'd help us get gasoline in the morning. She set us up with a very nice room with a working fireplace. In the morning, she made us a great breakfast and took us into town to grab gas. Never charged us a penny nor accepted any offering. Ever since then, I've wanted to come back here and stay as a paying customer - just a way to thank the owners. Unfortunately, those owners sold and there are new owners. However, I'm quite convinced were the scene to play out today, it would go much the same. We had a lovely stay. Even though we only live about a half hour away, I decided to take my wife (not the same girl from college) for a quick getaway - AND to check off this bucket list item. We booked a single overnight in the cottage. The inn was proactive about making sure they knew when we'd be arriving to make sure everything was set. The fireplace is wonderful. There's plenty of room to cozy up to it with both chairs and throw pillows. There's a whirlpool tub that we did not make use of (this time). We have it on good authority that it takes a long time to fill so plan accordingly. (There's a great little guest book in the room with this tidbit). The king-size bed was very comfortable. There's a mini-fridge in there, basic cable TV, and WiFi. Convenient, but go to this inn to UNplug. We did have a problem with the heat in the cottage but Lucas was extremely attentive and corrected the issue immediately. The next day, he was also our breakfast chef who's as handy with kitchen appliances as he is with furnaces. The breakfast was very good. Friends of ours go away fairly regularly but they don't necessarily travel far; they just do little escapes like this. They've inspired us. We think it's a good idea - it's nice to just get away for a day or two even if it's just around the corner. We will return here to try some of the other rooms and certainly to take advantage of the pool in the summer. If you're looking to meander and spend some quiet time with your spouse, the NW corner of the state is great and you cannot go wrong hanging your hat at the Blackberry River Inn for a few nights.

Great breakfast service, as noted - by very polite staff. Beautiful spaces, with books/games and no public TVs. There was just confusion with room assignment - we booked a specific room based on desire for a jetted tub and a loveseat/couch. At check-in were told that building is not heated and were "upgraded" to a room in same building without tub/jets/loveseat - not ideal in our case.

Wonderfully quaint, quiet and comfortable. My husband and stayed in the cottage. Very private. The fireplace was preped and ready to be lit. Extra firewood was readily provided by our host Lucas. Breakfast was bountiful and extremely fresh, accompanied by pleasant banter from our host. Plan to return in the summer to use the outdoor pool.

Lovely historical Inn - in a great town. We stayed there while attending an event at the Infinity Theater in Norfolk. Highly recommend both. Lucas, the proprietor, was very helpful and kind. It was one of the best breakfasts I ever had at a B&B - and served in a lovely dining room! Thank you. SUE B

Great hospitality. Our room was very clean. The breakfast was amazing! We loved Lucas who runs the Inn. We stayed in the cottage house our room had an attached deck. That was a game changer for us. We we’re able to walk out and enjoy the beautiful weather and view. The only thing I would change is to have cable in the bedrooms not just a DVD player. They did have a huge variety of DVD’s to choose from. We will definitely go back it was an awesome experience.

I love the charm of the old inn--I felt like I was stepping back in time! I pulled an old book from the library about the life of Florence Nightengale and read it by the fireplace each night. I loved the enclosed (unheated) porch off of my room (M2); I wrapped myself in a cozy blanket and was able to catch the sun coming up over the mountains each morning while drinking my coffee! The house was beautiful (loved the music lightly playing in the common spaces) and the sunny restaurant was the perfect location for a complimentary full breakfast service!! The food was INCREDIBLE and the service felt like I was in a 5-star establishment! I have NOTHING bad to say about the whole (2-night visit!) We absolutely loved the peace, quiet, romantic feel of this beautiful inn/B&B!!! Thanks for having us!!

Joe was the best part every morning at breakfast which is amazing. The room was sadly super outdated - TV but doesn't work ( you can use dvds?). The beds sadly are so uncomfortable, more like a cot. And there needs to be air condition of some kind - the fan isn't enough to make it now feel muggy - and that's in 60 degree weather outside, the room inside was more like 90. It's definitely charming but just wanted to give an honest review. It's worth it for the made to order breakfast in a beautiful old room :)
