埃爾金王飯店(Lord Elgin Hotel)

The room smelled bad. Kind of like a locker room would smell like or maybe like wet carpet. You get used to the smell after time but it's bothersome walking into your room after a long day and your initial reaction is to hold your breath.

The hotel is located in the heart of downtown Ottawa, so it is walking distance to virtually all major attractions and lively streets. The hotel itself is historic and the rooms appear to be recently renovated, however we found it lacked a bit of personality and felt a lot like any other generic hotel room. The bed was comfortable but the pillows were unfortunately not. Perhaps it is the older building, but the walls were very thin and we were woken up a number of times by people conversing in the halls and slamming doors. The valet service was quick and accommodating. Overall, it was alright but I would prefer to stay at one of the city’s boutique hotels next time for basically the same price.

As we approached the border going back into the US, we discovered we had left our US passports back in our room safe. We contacted the Lord Elgin and they immediately retrieved our passports and UPS'd them back to our home, saving us 3-4 hours of driving time. Very responsive staff.

Great location, unfortunately room location wasn't great- horrible view of an office building despite paying for park view, low floor so was awaken by garbage trucks at 6 am and right next to cleaning closet soaods woke is up every morning. I'm sure the hotel could have placed us in another room since we booked and paid in full a week in advance!

Emplacement idéal pour explorer Ottawa à la marche. L'hôtel est superbe, bien entretenu, propre. On peut se reposer devant un feu dans la cheminée, très agréable au retour d'une marche en hiver! L'accueil du personnel est chaleureux et efficace. Nous avions demandé une chambre aux étages supérieurs pour avoir une meilleure vue et on nous a accommodé en plus de nous offrir une chambre avec vue sur le parc : magnifique! En plus, l'hôtel nous a offert quelques surprises parce nous fêtions le 50e anniversaire de ma copine. Une escapade vraiment mémorable !

I liked the kindness of the staff and the service coming in was great! A gentleman got us a cart and helped load our bags . I do enjoy the character of some things in the hotel. For example, the mouldings , and brass vent covers in the elevator. I didn't like the size of the queen beds or the condition of the mattress and pillows. There are definitely quite a few things to be updated , but I do understand the rooms are small and the idea of keeping the old character.

With a name like “Lord Elgin”, the location and size of the building, I expected much more. The room was your average hotel room but on the small side with no microwave. One was brought up to me though as I needed one. The bed was ok and the pillows were comfy. A bonus was being able to open the window for some fresh air, and the park view was nice. Steve, the valet, was awesome with a great sense of humour/attitude. The front desk staff were friendly as well. I definitely expected something much swankier than what I got.

The Lord Elgin has the sophistication and class of the Fairmount-era hotels that have a special appeal here in Canada. The hotel is situated in a very central location, only a short walk of cab ride to the Byward Market and the many fine dining establishments along Elgin Street. We always enjoy our stays here.
