We stayed for 2 nights paying for bed and breakfast. There was supposed to be a £20 credit for the restaurant but we never received this. We had three meals in the restaurant and two breakfasts. Lunch on arrival was enjoyable and we asked for the same table for dinner, which was confirmed. However, that evening whilst having a pre-dinner drink in the bar, we saw another couple being seated at the table and when we queried it were told no such reservation had been made by the lunch staff. The first dinner was OK but almost £40 for a fatty Ribeye steak seems exorbitant when compared to what other establishments might charge for their finest fillet. The choice was limited and the food combinations were decidedly odd and the need to order vegetables at an additional cost just seemed another way to boost the hotel's income, rather than to please customers. Sadly though, we could only conclude that pleasing customers was not paramount when our first breakfast experience proved particularly dire. The service was at best chaotic and at worst standoffish. A request for eggs cooked to our liking was ignored and the breakfast had to be returned. In a five-star hotel we would expect that where a customer receives something they don't like, the staff will be professional enough to whisk it away without any fuss, especially as the kitchen had failed to cook it as requested. Instead we had to explain at length what was wrong and suffer glances and discussion from the waiting staff which left us feeling that we were being a nuisance! To cap it all when we had to ask for a second cup of coffee twice and it still didn't arrive after a lengthy wait we just got up and left, mentioning to the reception staff on our way out that breakfast had been chaotic. After these two dining experiences, our expectations for the second night's dinner were low and so we weren't really surprised when they were met. The restaurant and bar were very busy and again the service was once again chaotic with long waits between courses and slapdash delivery and removal of dishes. The 5-star standard was again absent so by the time we arrived for breakfast on our last morning, quite frankly, we couldn't wait to be on our way. Fearing a similar debacle with the cooked breakfast, we chose the continental option only to encounter bad nuts in the oddly-named 'granola' atop the yogurt, strawberry leaf stalks in the mixed berries that surely were meant to be in the bin, and spots of mould on some of the raspberries. Small issues some might feel but a sad indictment of the failure to live up to our expectations for this needlessly expensive stay. As we were checking out, the head waiter came over and apologised for our experience on the first morning stating that the team had been 'a man down'. Again, this isn't 5-star standard as the guest experience should not be spoilt because the hotel has staff shortages, although we felt that this is probably a regular occurrence at this hotel, arising f
